The Coal (Australia) index is based on the continuous financially settled futures on thermal coal loaded at Newcastle terminal and serves as a key price benchmark for the global thermal coal market, where Australia is a major supplier. In June 2026 the maximum reached 151.75 USD/ton, the minimum was 127.70 USD/ton, and the average level stood at 143.28 USD/ton. The index acts as the underlying asset for futures contracts on international exchanges.
