Yesterday the president of Peru Martín Vizcarra was impeached by Congress
November 10, 2020
Corruption was the reason for the removal. 105 out of 130 lawmakers voted to remove the current president. Mr. Vizcarra accepted the decision to avoid a constitutional crisis.
Manuel Merino, the president of the Congress, businessman, and opposition lawmaker will serve as an interim president until next July (the end of the term of the current president).
The removal shocked the country as no one expected the president to be impeached. It became a culmination of a conflict between Mr. Vizcarra, a centrist, and his Congress opponents, who were against his attempts to rebuild the political and judicial system of the country.
