Profile

Savings Banks have been an integral part of Finnish society for over 190 years. The first Savings Bank was established in Turku in 1822. The central organisation, Savings Bank Association, was established in 1906. Originally, Savings Banks were founded to serve the needs of servants and people with low income. The objective was to provide thrift education for the Finnish people. Savings banks were the first to offer banking services to all Finns, irrespective of social standing or means. Operations continue to be inspired by the Savings Bank ideal, i.e. the desire to promote the wellbeing of both individuals and communities. Thrift promotion is quoted in the Savings Bank Act as the special purpose of the Savings Banks.
