Standard Chartered has over 25 years of operations in Taiwan, with the opening of its first branch in 1985. In 2006, it became the first international bank to acquire a local bank with the acquisition of Hsinchu International Bank. This was followed by the acquisition of American Express Bank and Asia Trust & Investment Corporation in 2008, further expanding its network. With 88 branches island-wide today, Standard Chartered is the largest international bank in Taiwan by branch network, in addition to having the largest mortgage, personal loans and small and medium enterprise (SME) loan portfolio amongst international banks.
