Ivano-Frankivsk (Stanislaviv, or Stanislav, until 1962) is a royal free city, which stretches between the rivers Nadvirnyanskaya and Solotvinskaya Bistritsa, in the foothills of the picturesque Carpathians, near ancient Galich - the capital of the Galicia-Volyn principality. In 1662 the city received the Magdeburg right. It was founded on the site of the village of Zabolottya, as a fortress to protect against the raids of the Crimean Tatars and a stronghold of the Polish magnates Potocki on Galician land. Stanislaviv began with the Market Square and the Town Hall, which have survived to this day, albeit modified. Its subsequent restructuring reflected the Renaissance ideas about the "ideal city", which is embodied in the planning of the suburb, its streets and temples.
