The Province of Chubut in Argentina is the third largest of the 23 provinces in the Argentine Republic. It has an area of 224,864 square kilometres, covering 8.1% of the nation's territory. It is located in the region of Patagonia and borders the Republic of Chile to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. To the north is the province of Río Negro and to the south the province of Santa Cruz. The Province is the main oil-producing region in the Argentine Republic, accounting for 26.5% of the country's total oil production in 2009. The Province has the largest proven reserves of oil in Argentina, with nearly 180 million cubic metres, or 42% of the country's total, providing approximately 18 years of exploitation, compared to the nation's average of 11 years.
