Daily Insight-Agriculture shows mild growth; PoR to rule today; UAH strengthens
The Party of Regions (PoR) announced at yesterday\'s inaugural gathering of the newly elected parliament that it is ready to approve its candidates for the posts of parliament speaker and prime minister. Given the PoR\'s leading position in shaping the ruling majority of MPs, this situation might be beneficial if the candidates\' backgrounds were better suited for these posts. While the PoR supports the appointments of Mr Ryvbak (66 years old) as the parliament speaker and Mr Azarov (65 years old) as the PM, both candidates are over 60-years-old, meaning that their policymaking views are most likely quite outdated. For an economy in dire need of a wide spectrum of reforms, old tricks are more likely to be a hindrance than a catalyst for advancement.
