Pakistan is a large South Asian economy with Islamabad as its capital. Urdu and English are widely used, and the Pakistani rupee (PKR) is the national currency. The economy is diversified across agriculture, textiles, manufacturing, energy, construction, services, and financial activities.
The Pakistan bonds market is one of the largest and more developed fixed-income markets in this group. It includes Treasury bills, Pakistan Investment Bonds (PIBs), floating-rate government securities, Government of Pakistan Ijara Sukuk, and corporate debt instruments.
The Pakistan government bond market is accessible through the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), which operates a Government Debt Securities (GDS) market. Eligible government instruments include Treasury bills, Pakistan Investment Bonds, and Government of Pakistan Sukuk. The domestic banking system and OTC market also play important roles in government securities trading.
The corporate segment includes bonds, term finance certificates, sukuk, and other debt instruments issued by banks, financial institutions, energy companies, infrastructure businesses, and large corporations. The development of Pakistani bonds is closely linked to monetary policy, fiscal financing requirements, and the country's banking system.
For international investors, Pakistani government bonds provide exposure to a large emerging-market economy with substantial financing needs. Key drivers include inflation, monetary policy, IMF programs, foreign-exchange reserves, fiscal deficits, external debt, energy prices, and sovereign credit conditions. Pakistan bonds therefore provide access to one of South Asia's largest domestic debt markets.
