The first Central Bank of Georgia was founded in 1919. As it is, the National Bank of Georgia has been operating since 1991.
The National Bank of Georgia implements the monetary policy in accordance with the main areas of the monetary and currency policy outlined by the Parliament of Georgia. Since September 2006, the National Bank of Georgia has started issuing certificates of deposit to absorb the excess liquidity of the banking system in the mid-term. Certificates of deposit are issued via auctions, which commercial banks are entitled to participate in. Currently, the National Bank of Georgia offers certificates of deposit for 3 months. Certificates of the National Bank of Georgia can be held by commercial banks and international financial institutions. |
