It was established in 1993 by African governments, African private and institutional investors, as well as non-African financial institutions and private investors for the purpose of financing and promoting intra- and extra-African trade. The Bank has branch offices in Harare, Zimbabwe; Abuja, Nigeria; and Tunis, Tunisia. The newly appointed Prime Minister of Guinea Kabine Komara was a director at the bank before being appointed to his present position.
