BCC San Marzano di San Giuseppe is a cooperative bank founded in 1956 in San
Marzano di San Giuseppe (Taranto), a little village in the southern Italian Region of Puglia.
The bank had just one branch until 1991. Since then, it has expanded organically within its
home province, and increased its commercial network to ten branches, concentrated in the
province of Taranto (8) and Brindisi (2).
It serves the needs of local households and entrepreneurs (about 18000 customers) and
has about 1500 shareholders. Very close to social problems, BCC San Marzano prefers
action over words and has a strong proximity to its customers, that have allowed the bank
to maintain asset quality indicators above the average of other BCC (the ratio of net
nonperforming assets to net customer loans is below 1%). Up-to-date with the latest
technological equipment, the bank has several leverages and offers custom-made banking
products to local households and entrepreneurs in a difficult environmental context.
It is the first bank awarded with the Sodalitas Social Award and the Oscar di Bilancio in the
same year (2008).
Also it is the smallest bank rated by Standard and Poor’s, which assigned it BBB- on short
term and A-3 on long term.
At the year-end 2010 the bank had €500 million of total assets and €35 million of net worth.
