Mongolia is a landlocked East Asian economy with Ulaanbaatar as its capital. Mongolian is the official language, and the Mongolian togrog (MNT) is the national currency. The economy is strongly dependent on mining, particularly coal and copper, supported by agriculture, construction, transportation, and services.
The Mongolia bonds market includes government securities, corporate bonds, and other fixed-income instruments. Government securities have historically been issued and traded through the Bank of Mongolia, while corporate securities are associated with the Mongolian Stock Exchange (MSE).
The Mongolia government bond market has undergone significant changes. The Bank of Mongolia states that public issuance of government securities in the primary market was suspended indefinitely in November 2017, while secondary-market trading between banks has continued. Government securities remain important as risk-free instruments for the domestic financial market.
The corporate segment includes bonds issued by banks, financial institutions, mining companies, and other large corporates. The Mongolian Stock Exchange provides organized market infrastructure for listed securities, while Mongolian bonds are strongly influenced by commodity prices and domestic financial conditions.
For international investors, Mongolian government bonds provide exposure to a highly commodity-dependent frontier economy. Copper and coal prices, Chinese demand, mining exports, foreign-exchange conditions, fiscal policy, and infrastructure investment are particularly important factors. Mongolia bonds therefore offer exposure to the country's resource-driven economic cycle.
