The Maldives is a South Asian island nation in the Indian Ocean, with Male as its capital. Dhivehi is the official language, and the Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR) is the national currency. The economy is heavily dependent on tourism, supported by fisheries, transportation, construction, real estate, and financial services.
The Maldives bonds market includes government bonds, corporate bonds, and Islamic securities such as sukuk. Securities are traded through the Maldives Stock Exchange (MSE), which currently lists multiple government securities and corporate debt instruments. The Maldives government bond market has expanded through multiple listed government issues.
The corporate segment includes debt issued by banks, financial institutions, tourism-related companies, and other domestic businesses. Islamic finance instruments, including sukuk, are also relevant to the country's financial system, while Maldivian bonds provide access to both government and corporate fixed-income instruments.
For international investors, Maldivian government bonds provide exposure to a highly tourism-dependent economy. Investment performance is particularly sensitive to tourist arrivals, foreign-exchange reserves, fiscal policy, external debt sustainability, climate risks, and developments in tourism and infrastructure. Maldives bonds therefore offer exposure to a small but increasingly organized domestic securities market.
