Papua New Guinea is the largest economy in the Pacific Islands region, with Port Moresby as its capital. English, Tok Pisin, and Hiri Motu are widely used, and the Papua New Guinean kina (PGK) is the national currency. The economy is driven by mining, oil and gas, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, construction, and services.
The Papua New Guinea bonds market includes government Treasury bills, Government Inscribed Stock, central-bank instruments, and corporate debt securities. The Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG) manages the domestic money and bond market and plays a central role in government securities operations.
The Papua New Guinea government bond market includes Treasury bills and Treasury bonds. Government securities are issued through auctions, while BPNG also operates a Tap Facility that allows investors to purchase government securities outside the regular auction process. The domestic market includes both primary issuance and secondary-market transactions.
The corporate segment is smaller but includes debt securities issued by companies and financial institutions. The PNG National Stock Exchange (PNGX) provides organized securities-market infrastructure, while Papua New Guinean bonds are also influenced by the country's banking and institutional-investor base.
For international investors, Papua New Guinean government bonds provide exposure to a resource-rich frontier economy. Commodity prices, LNG and mining projects, fiscal policy, exchange rates, infrastructure investment, and external financing are major drivers. Papua New Guinea bonds therefore provide exposure to one of the Pacific region's largest resource economies.
