South African government bonds are surging as the central bank is buying government debt

The South African Reserve Bank announced it would buy government debt as part of emergency actions to ease a liquidity crisis linked to the coronavirus spread.  

As a result, government bonds jumped significantly. While the 10-year yield on government bonds dropped by 143 bp. 

The country is supposed to start a 21-day lockdown from midnight on Thursday in response to coronavirus.
